Technical support...

DID YOU KNOW THAT nearly every phone system reseller online offering "free, unlimited technical support" only provides technical support through email? This gives them time to take your question and forward it to the manufacturer for an answer.

Another trick many online sellers try to pull is to refer you to a web-based forum for support - usually to forums they don't own or monitor for your questions. Many are likely to refer you to the forum at the manufacturer's website NECDSX.com which is operated by NEC for its installers, or "sundance" which is also for professional installers.

Always ask a reseller ... "If I need to speak to a live technician, may I?"

Repairs ...

Many online resellers will tell you to send your product to NEC for repair. Most of these resellers do not actually stock the equipment they sell - it's stored at their suppliers and is drop-shipped to you when you purchase it.

NEC does not accept equipment directly from customers for repair - you have to go through your reseller.

Most internet resellers do not stock spares if you need a replacement part.

When we send your equipment to NEC for repair, it can take as long as 8 weeks - sometimes longer - before NEC returns it to us to give to you.

Good online resellers keep spares on hand and can swap out your parts while you're waiting for repair which is good because it can take 2 to 8 weeks to get parts back from NEC repair.

Remote programming ...

Most internet resellers do not offer a programming service. Online resellers that do offer remote programming have certified technicians on staff, ready to help you.

Unfortunately, most internet resellers only drop-ship and do not have the staff to program your phone system if you need help. Asking "can you remotely program my system?" is a good gauge of whether or not the reseller is capable of helping you - if you need help - after the sale. Some will try to explain that you won't need help, or that it is too complicated to remotely program a phone system.

Rest assured that any experienced technician can remotely program your phone system, but very few online resellers have technicians that are specifically trained on the NEC DSX system - and those that don't will try to explain why you'll never need the service.

Another way to quickly identify a drop-ship only operation is by looking at their product line - if they offer systems from many manufacturers, they are likely drop-shippers. It is worth calling them to ensure they can support the system you have chosen with experience technicians.

Did you know that there are over 1,000 pages of manuals? If you've never installed and programmed your own phone system, it's good to buy from an online reseller that can program the system for you if you need help after the purchase. Sure, you don't have to buy the service, but it sure is good to know that you can if you need it.
